I'd say the chances it'll happen are extremely small.

If you buy a SSD that fits into the X220 drive bay properly (7mm) then you shouldn't really have any issues. I only tend to hear problems when people try to force in or modify standard 9.5mm SSD's into the recent X Series notebooks which can be a hit or miss affair.

You might get hit by a bus tomorrow, but you still leave the house. Bad things can happen, but you should plan your life around things that very unlikely to happen.

Maybe I am missing something but if the SSD you are connecting is designed to support the interface used in the X220, which I assume is SATA, is designed for use in notebooks and it's the correct dimensions. I would of thought the chances of it frying your motherboard were almost Nil, why would it? Unless the X220 has some special non-standard power draw specification that needs to be met on the SATA interface.
I could be wrong but to me it sounds like the people telling these horror stories must have tried to perform some non-standard mod on the drive or bay to get their SSD to fit/work with their X220 and the mod caused the problem.
avoid the error: "2100: Detection Error on HDD0 (Main HDD)"
