I received my T400 the other day (thanks to advice of many here) and I am enjoying it. I'm playing with Vista for the first time, exploring Thinkvantage etc. I've made my initial recovery disks but I'm having trouble backing up or copying SWTOOLS. I have the DVD Burner (HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-U20N)

I did have an initial problem creating the recovery disks. Three times disk 2 (of the 3 recovery disks) failed. Twice it failed at the same point (85% thru the validation of the disk. I didn't see the third failure. Anyway, eventually it finished.

I went to back up the SWTOOLS folder and tried doing it thru windows DVD copy and burn the first time, but it wouldn't work at all. I could load the files into the window, but when i went to burn it, it said there was an error with the disks before it really started. The error came up immeidately. I tried multiple disks.

I then tried Roxio, and tried to load the whole folder SWTOOLS, but is said it couldn't copy some of the files. Actually, it only copied the SWTOOLS folder and one file in it. It burned it, but there was basically nothing in the folder.

I tried an experiment and could copy one of the subfolders in SWTOOLS to the roxio.

I'm usuing TDK DVD-R disks that have generally worked fine for me in other devices.

    What am I missing here?

Is your optical drive definitely working? If it's failing when you try burn discs then you may have a faulty drive. Try burning some cds in WMP and try watching a few dvds on it.

    Thanks,

I just finished testing the drive and I could burn music files from both windows explorer and WMP. I used DVD-R and +R disks to test. I also can watch DVD video.

I'm copying the SWTOOLS folder to a USB drive with copy/paste. It seems to be working. It started at 2.1 MB/S, while I was watching a DVD.

I stopped DVD and copy speed doesn't change much.

Still don't know why I can't back up SWTOOLS directly to disk.
