One of the advantages of having a laptop when plugged in is that the battery becomes your uninterruptable power supply if your line voltage should fail. I'd rather keep a battery installed at all times.

Well, if you keep the battery in all the time, then you'll wear it out faster. Heat and keeping it at full (or close to full) charge would take its toll.
But the benefit of keeping it in is the cpu should run full throttle depending on power plan and of course, a ups.
Where I live though, power isn't cut very often. So I prefer to keep my battery out when I'm not on the move.
I really don't care for a dummy piece; I just make sure dust doesn't build up in there. -
That's not a bad idea. but instead of just a dummy batter it should hold 2 fans or something that run slowly cooling it and software inside the machine can detect it and run the CPU 10% faster and the video 10% faster.
Something a long those lines. Basically an overclocking module. -
I never thought of that but it is a very good point -
I find it funny that so many of you are so paranoid about the battery. The battery is warrantied for a year by Lenovo. So if you have any issues they will send you a replacement. If you notice that the wear level is getting high call Lenovo for a new battery. Even out of warranty batteries aren't going to break the bank. You guys buy expensive machines then balk at replacing a $100-$125 dollar battery after a couple of years.
It only takes one power loss to totally hose your system or loose valuable data. -
Even if your local power grid is "reliable", there's always the "what if someone trips and pulls the cord out" sort of scenario. I don't mind replacing the battery every couple of years. Of course, in a few years you can by something 4X faster for less money.
