I sucsessfully went from vista to xp using the lenovo win xp downgrade discs on a z61m. I now have xp sp2 loaded.

I have read the guides, but was chicken to go all the way to a clean install and manually install the drivers.

What stuff should I get rid of to get rid of bloatware but still be able to use the thinkpad utilities?

dont want to go bare bones, but want to get rid of some junk

Install the updating software and let it update your drivers. It'll also let you pick what utilities to install.

I like stallan's pov on the updating software. He doesn't like it for a variety of well stated reasons.

Yes, the bloatware does consume memory resources. I run a performance monitor that i wrote continuously. It does take up memory resources but for the most part, makes little to no processing demands.

When I have attempted to eliminate it, I've noticed that it has a lot of interdependdencies and shuting one piece down tends to have a cascading effect.

I got mine two days before you and I am a systems purist but I don't think I'll ever do a clean install. I don't need the user aids and haven't really explorer them. But I have invested a HARD week of doing installations and I don't think I'm going to back out now.

I do think it would be really great if we devloped functional lists of executables that could be deleted from the registry and even deleted on disk.

For example, tonight c:\program files\lenovo\client security solution\tvtpwn_tray.exe did take up a lot of processor.

I know I don't need a process following me around asking me if I want to store passwords. That process is not long for this world. What if we mapped them all out functionally?

I think so..... it's part of the password system. I had to totally remove the password manager from my Lenovo 3000 which was different software from Lenovo's.

diskkeeper light (doesnt windows do that?)

    google toolbar=gone

also there is some intergarted camera option, but I dont see one on my monitor, can I delte that?

Finally how about that thinkpad messanger thing?

    picasa?

You definitely should NOT use Symantec/Norton AV and AVG AV at the same time. You shouldn't even install them together - they can easily conflict and cause problems. Use one or the other, map_guy.

I remove all of those things. However... I buy or will buy Diskkeeper Pro Premier. I believe lenovo may remove the normal defragmenter. I have not had a chance to check.

The reason I use the heavy versions of diskeeper is that it (usually) does boottime deframentation and will defragment directories. One a complex system this too is an import performance enhancement.
