so just got my laptop yesterday and was playing around with it today and noticed a high pitch sound coming from the top left corner area. The sound got even louder when i plugged in a usb device. It gives me a headache listening to that high pitch noise :(.

has anyone experienced this? any suggestions on fixing this?

I experience the same sound when I scroll in my web browser or use my USB key drive. I don't believe there is any way to fix this.

Please correct me if I'm wrong.

This is the infamous "CPU Whine" that affects many of us. Try searching this forum for "CPU Whine" or "Whining" and you'll find a on of hits. Some say that turning off the deep sleep state of the CPU and/or using lower performance settings can help.

    Mutnat is correct.
If you look at my thread CPU whining, anyone? you'll see quite a few ideas how to take of that. Basically switch of the automatic CPU in BIOS + low performance settings will help.
Also, update your drivers this will help too.
I had exactly the same issues - exactly the same on 400s.
Send it for repairs, got it back, was pretty much the same thing.
I made Lenovo give me a refund- a full refund after 1 month of trying to figure out how to fix this. Honeslty I don't think there's a fix. Either you will be able to live with it (I wasn't) or you will call them and tell them to take it back. Lenovo is in serious troubles with this ..I know they are aware of that because when I forced them to take it back for a full refund, they didn't say much. I can't believe that we all still rave about their quality. Cheaper computers don't have a problem like this.
I want my old IBM quality back...this is China.
    sorry for the bad news.

btw. the USB devices..as you described, that was the same for me. Also, when you scroll on a web, it'll stop for a millisecond and then it produces the same noise again. try and listen to it.

Hmm. What automatic CPU setting in the BIOS are you talking about Christina? I have 3 USB devices always plugged in to my T410 and I've never noticed any CPU whine, however I noticed that when I have the Lenovo power manager open it gets pretty bad (almost headache inducing like the OP), as soon as I close it it stops.

automatic power management, should have been more careful when typing. sorry
Talin, that is interesting..for what I know even if I turned of the automatic power management at my 400s, the whine was unpleasant. Only when the CPU was set on minimal performance,it was okay. but then again if you switch of your automatic power management, how long does your battery last?

I wonder if automatic power management is actually turbo mode. Hmm, I'll have to look into that.

i did some search and tried everything i could.
went into device manager/usb root hub/power management/uncheck no luck :(
tried playing with the power settings in the lenovo power controls. turning off deep sleep, trying CPU speed from maximum to lowest one by one. dosent seem to work :(.
i tried running on battery and no luck there.
but when i put my laptop under 100% load, the sound disappeared but then comes back.

    nothing seems to work :(

Sorry guys to hear that- both of you. I have already started a different thread on this on this web: CPU whining, anyone? And if you search the web, you'll find many more people mentioning this. HelloMotto it's strange that in your case nothing has really worked - usually some of the stuff we suggested works.
Now I don't see that you can do anything about it....btw. you did upgrade the drivers as i told you earlier?
You'll probably have to send it to Lenovo - and If I was you I would not wait with this. So they have it on record that the problem started right after you got the computer. Eventually, if you can't live with it, you will probably want to return it.
hkseo100...could you describe the problem a bit better?
I am trying to ascertain at these pages how wide-spread and problematic the issue is.
this is the reason why I have yet not bought a new ThinkPad...looking into it i hear more and more stories about this whine.
