I went thru the same process as many others here... and i finally settled on the highest-end X60, which is not very high compared to the T-series haha.

Fortuately for me, i can actually TRY the exact (or nearly exact) preconfigured model in advance because i know the laptop custodian at ibm where there's one of everything.

It is hard to decide... because i see advantages in each of the T-series (both 15" with the gorgeous flexview and the more portable 14"), the X-series and even the z61t series (the z61m and R series were never on the radar screen for me).

Actually, at first i tried to get a T60 14.1" 200768u, but i can't wait a month. I really can't wait so i called in thinking, okay I'll get any decent 14" T60 but there weren't any in inventory (there were some "in stock" but that meant the parts were "in stock" in asia and it had to be assembled/shipped, requiring 2 weeks). I really cannot wait til mid-Sept, so I thought, OK i'll try the best z61t they have - again none in inventory. :( So... i settled on the high end X60, last unit in real inventory and I was promised it'd ship on monday or tues. The fact that the X60's have won Editor's Choice in almost every major publication somewhat swayed me too.

Portability was key for me in the end. I've always gone smaller & lighter with each laptop i've owned.

This will be my first X series laptop (I own half a dozen T-series). I don't need a graphics card, because i don't play games. This forum has too many teens fixated on games IMHO, hehe.

I decided I can live with the cruddy small XGA screen as a trade-off for the incredible portability, because my software development days are over thank heavens, and anyway i have an external LCD tho i never use it with my T41).

But I am concerned about the loud small crappy mouse buttons on the X60/T60 (these are quite inferior to the lush buttons on the T40/X40 series), and the tiny Ctrl-Alt keys which are now so small because of the addition of the dam windows key.

Oh, the lack of an optical burns me too hehe, but i got the dock and UltraSlim super multiburner... i dont care about watching dvd's (i can download & watch mpeg instead; dvd's are SOO 1990's hehe), but i may be pooped sometime when i need to load a CD whilst away.

The clincher: the X series make you look like the junior executive. Hehe.

You mean X60s. And what's with the excessive femininity? It's disturbing.
Are you trying to troll? On NBR? :p

Could you illuminate the rest of us about the guidelines for achieving an "acceptable" level of femininity? Thanks.

Nice to hear that you got a current generation ThinkPad. Your help was invaluable in my decision, and I am thrilled with my T60 (200772U). The screen is the best screen that I have ever used. I go back to my desktop now and wonder how I managed to use that for so long. The lack of clarity is positively infuriating whenever I use it now.

Hopefully I can put together a review on this amazing machine one of these days.

In any case, be sure to post some pictures of your laptop whenever you recieve it and best of luck with the new laptop. Surely it will be top notch given that it is a ThinkPad.

Loud mouse buttons on the t60? The ones on my T60p are silent. I feel a soft click, but there's no sound to them. Perhaps I just got lucky.

As an aside. I am thinking about requisitioning an X60 for work - I do most of my actual typing and work on my T60p now, but I need something for lugging around the warehouses and offices at work, and the little, light X60/X60s seem perfect. Of course if that gets rejected I might grab a used X41, if the price is low enough. The T60p is my baby, but the lighter one'll be my redheaded stepchild ;) It's going to get dragged through hell on site. So an older, use X series model might be better suited than something new and shiny..

Wow, I never thought you'd give up all those pixels for a couple pounds, I'd love to hear your impressions after a week or two using it. I'm thinking of going a similar route, but I don't think I'll be able to go Thinkpad unless the Merom refresh has a 14" sxga+ flexview option on the T's. Twisted neumatics just simply drive me crazy.

Nuntius, I take it you're commenting on Bunny's 'girlie laptop' comment. I took that as a tongue in cheek statement about her choice to go with the cute lil' ultraportable, but maybe I'm wrong. Either way, I don't see anything wrong with the comment, and certainly not overly feminine. Hardly at all, in fact, even if I am mistaking her meaning. But then, I'm attracted to women who aren't afraid to be feminine. Not the dumb OMG SEX AND BEER!!! type, but I'm tired of all the more intelligent women seeming to think there's something wrong with being sexual, and all the rest centering their existence around it.

My girlfriend's a girlie girl, and **** it, I think it's hot she spurned the trap of a Macbook and hopped onto a sleek Z61t. She's in love with it, and loves to put it to sleep in its little case, as she describes it. Thinkpads may have a no-nonsense business air, but just as buying one is a smart decision, smart women know what to choose just as so =)

Well I just ordered a x60(17097HU ) and as a 260lber with callouses on my knuckles it makes me feel great to know Im getting in touch with my feminine side. I just cant wait to get it! But till I then I think Im going to bake a quiche.

    :p

But all kidding aside it was a hard choice between the T60 14.1 and the X60. Thats a lot of pixles to give up.

And off topic ... What kinda bag are you going to get for your new x60?

Bunny the flexview advocate buys the worst screen in the thinkpad lineup haha.

Yep it was quite hard to give up extra pixels and decide on the crappy little 12" xga screen but i will be out and moving around *every* day with this puppy so i went for small & light. Like so many things in life, it's a trade-off.

Hope I love the 3.5-pound 70-square-inch form factor. And the EVDO.

About the mouse keys, the left mouse key on the X60 models i tested were noisy. They're smaller too, and not as "lush" feeling as on the T43/T41.

If i hate the X, or if I cease going out with it every day, look for a good deal in the buy-sell section here in a few months LOL

I really wanted a mid-range T60 (or T60p but i cant afford that). Again tho it's the portability.

As for the bag question, I already ordered/receive the thinkpad Organizer case http://www-131.ibm.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?productId=8718820&storeId=10000001&langId=-1&catalogId=-840 I ordered this when i was expecting to get a T instead of an X... The case weighs more than the X laptop :D

Yeah, well, I'm a huge matte finished standard aspect ratio advocate and I'm seriously considering the Fujitsu Q2010 with it's wide format glossy screen. I think it's a TN panel too, go figure. I wish Lenovo could source enough sizes/resolutions of IPS panels so they could just go flexview across their entire line. LG needs to get their ass in gear.

Pusherman, I think we'd all be more impressed with a souffle

Sorry all for taking the troll bait, but sometimes it brightens up a bad day just a touch.
