Im thinking about an x60 model, which doesnt include an optical drive. Are there any reasonably priced usb bus powered combo drives? (or at least dvd-roms?)

Just thinking it would be nice to watch dvd's on a plane without having to rip them beforehand.

You can get a USB powered case here for $15 and put any drive in it you want. I have the exact same case for my T42. It works well. I'd recommend the NEC 6650 DVD burner at NewEgg. Even if you are you are not burning movies they are nice for backups. They are a small premium over a combo drive.

Is there a downside for buying a USB powered case over just a 5.25 enclosure w/ ac?

The downside would be if your machines USB ports don't have enough power to power the drive. The one I mentioned works well on my T42. The upside is you don't have to carry an adapter as well.

Yes, the 6750 is the new model. Same thing as the 6650, just a tad bit faster.
