I think the only difference is r&r can use fat driver for backup. And only professional version windows 7 can do network and whole disk backup.

It can but do you normallly carry DVDs? lol. As far as a pre-boot recovery where you just press a button, I think R&R is great. When you least need it is whe you need it and its right there.

I do regular backups to an external hard drive which I do carry with me at all times. I would not back up to DVD as a sole source either.

The external drive is about the size of an ipod and it's tucked away in my backpack when not in use. I'll say this, when you're carrying around a dissertation in your laptop/storage media your ideas of backing up change drastically. I'm glad that stage of my life is over, but my backup habits remain. :)

I have a t61p and Windows 7. I also have an extreme system which I built myself. I would never use any thing but Windows to do a backup. I have never had to restore a system but once when the Lenovo was stolen.
So to answer the question of the thread, I don't know because I've never used anything but Microsoft. I would say that Windows Backup and Restore should be used in place of Lenovo when stable.
