Hi!
New here... and new to laptops too. I decided that my first laptop (for school) simply had to be the best and zeroed in on the thinkpad. Did a lot of scouring-these-pages before I placed an order for an R61, to understand all the jargon. And have just begun reading the painful process of warranty/service.
Well, as a tech-unsavvy person, I'm horrified by the multitude of problems and solutions that are being discussed here (obviously, people only post when they have a problem, so it's probably just magnified, compared to the actual scenario). Since I'd neither be able to spot a problem all by myself nor find a solution if I did, I thought I'd take your help in inspecting my thinkpad once it arrives.
Does the package come with detailed explanations on how to set up the system once it comes, like wireless for instance? Can you list all the parts I should check once it's delivered, and how I should do that? A couple of lines in explanation will greatly improve my understanding. Some of the common problems I seemed to gather from the forum here are:
* wrong parts installed - and for some reason, even if it is lenovo's fault, i pay the restocking fee for them to replace the system (or if parts are defective)?
* dead pixels on the LCD - small parts of the screen that don't work? and Lenovo doesn't replace it if there are less than some specified number of them
If there was an earlier discussion on this, could you post the link?

woah....I think you are getting ahead of yourself. I recently took delivery of an R61 and could not be happier. This machine is built rock solid and so far has minimal issues. I deleted some of the included programs but kept a lot of the IBm software too. I use it daily mostly for surfing and document writing and some light gaming when i have time. The battery is decent, the wireless is excellent, and I cant complain about the speed. Post some specs of your machine. Feel free to ask any questions to the forum. Everyone here is pretty great on helping.

If you end up getting incorrect components, you should be able to exchange the system with the correct one.
Here is the policy on dead/stuck pixels:

maybe I am getting ahead of myself... I'm not pessimistic or anything. I just need info on how to perform a routine system check once the laptop arrives. I'd be happier if on the first day, I know my thinkpad is in super-duper condition
check parts upon delivery
