on my asus, it automatically switches to external monitor.
but on the y580, it does nothing.

I dunno if you figured it out but Just press Fn + F3 and you can switch to external. Also make sure you set the laptop to NOT sleep under battery when the lid is closed (just to be safe). I don't think there's auto switch.

I use an external monitor and changed the settings in the Intel Graphics and Media Control Panel under 'Displays' > 'Multiple Displays'. I set the Operating Mode to single display with the primary display being my external monitor and when I close the lid, it switches to the external monitor. I unplug the HDMI port, and it switches to my laptop.

yeah, that's not what i'm looking for. I don't want to use external lcd as primary.

I know FN+F3 does what I want, but I have to change it manually. I want it to be automatic, like 99% of laptops out there.

my default mode is 'extended desktop'.
I use dual monitor, with the laptop being the primary display.

    on my 2 older laptops,
when i close the laptop lid, it automatically stops extended desktop mode, and makes the external lcd the primary display, and displays my desktop on the external lcd.
when i open the laptop lid again, extended desktop mode starts again, and I'm back to dual screen.

this is the first laptop I've owned with Intel graphics.
So i dunno if it's possible to make it work

I also noticed that when I only select laptop as primary display, (single monitor mode), but have the external lcd plugged into hdmi.......... when I close the lid, it also does not automatically switch to the external lcd.

    anyone else have this issue?

i think this is default Lenovo behavior. They most likely programmed the bios so that screen does not automatically switch.

I have to manually do it with windows+P.
