I know that the W510 has better/stronger options as far as processors and video options.

i am wondering what else is different between the two.

    1) Is the optical drive both swappable on both models ?? Do both models have a quick release lock/unlock mechanism ??

    2) T510 has always on USB, while W510 has USB 3.0.

    3) Palmrest creaks on either one??

    4) what else is different ??

thank you for your help thinkpad lovers.

Don't know much about the T510, but my W510 has one small palmrest creak on the left, just between the speaker and all the stickers. It's a small area, but the OCD in me keeps me pushing on it.

Same creak on my T510. It is a grave engineering failure on Lenovo's part!

1.- Yes, both use the same optical drives, and they are hot-swappable.
2.- Both the T510 and W510 have an always-on USB port, and the W510 has 2 USB 3.0 ports as well.
3.- They use the same chassis, but not everyone has reported that they have the left palmrest squeak.
4.- Not much else. The more powerful GPU/CPU options in the W510 result in greatly reduced battery life.

W510 have 4 ram slots, while the T510 have two.

W510 can also be optioned with with colour calibrator.

That's only for quad core though.

Thinkpads W510 comes with 4 ram slots whether you have the quad core or not. Unlike HP laptops which cheats you out of 2 ram slots if you don't get the quad core.

Oh yeah, forgot about those :p

I wasn't aware that the W510 was even available without a quad core?

Haven't followed the CPU front of things, there is probably only quad cores available right now, but sometimes Lenovo releases odd models in certain countries. But the fact of the matter is that Lenovo W510 have 4 ram slots, unlike the HP laptop where the amount of ram slots depend on your CPU option, and many people were unaware of this.

Is there any other component on the T510 that stands out above the W510 other than a dual-core option?

Im trying to convince myself to get a T510 instead of a w510, but i just don't see the logic...

So. back to the main question. Is there anything available on the T510 that is not available on the w510?

    A lower price :p

Buy what you need, since technology is always moving forward - do you actually need the W510's power?

The biggest thing you sacrifice, besides price, is battery life.

Although the spec sheets show similar weights, the W510 requires a much larger power supply. You can get away with using the smaller power supplies, but the W510 scales performance WAY back so you don't drain the battery while running on inadequate AC power.

If battery life & power supply size are not issues for you, the W510 offers much better graphics, double the RAM and quad core processors that may delay technical obsolescence for ????? time. To me, the additional RAM & enhanced graphics are more important than better CPU performance.

Can some owners weigh theirs -- the W510 and the T510 -- and tell us what the bl--dy things weigh. I don't believe the spec sheets...

    Great thanks...

If you read through the owners threads, the weight question has probably been answered already. Yeah, it's a lot of pages, but you'll get plenty of owners' feedback. The site also has some search within a thread utilities if you don't want to invest the time reading what owners say about their product.

I know the difference in power supply size was answered in the W510 Owners thread.

    Thanks, Glenn.

    >> Although the spec sheets show similar weights, the W510 requires a much larger power supply.

And the much larger power supply is also much heavier than that of the T510.
