    Hi,

I bought Samsung 80GB 5400RMP hard drive for my notebook and have problems (sometimes, the drive is not recognized and does not start spinning at start-up, other times, all is fine. If the hard drive does start spinning, it boots up no problem).

Is this a hard drive or is it compatibility problem?

How can I find out the fastes/biggest harddrive I can use on my machine? I should mention that when hooked up through the pcmcia adapter, the Samsung drive works fine. Also, all the tests on the hard drive show no problems with the drive.

I talked with IBM tech support and they told me to use either Hitachi or Fujitsu on R40 series (2681-CU1).

Anyone out there have other opinions?

    Thanks,
    vk
ps. I've updated my BIOS and embedded controller and still had the problem. It is intermittent in nature, so sometimes I boot up 3-4 times in a row without problems, other times I need to keep pressing the power button until the drive is recorgnized.
