    The real question in my opinion is: what *exactly* do you need the dock for?

    Knowing that set of facts would make giving a proper recommendation much easier.

    Generally speaking, the port replicator *replicates* what already exists on the machine. A dock is a bit more of an advanced option.

    We've used a 4337 dock with our T420 and my wife was quite happy with it.

    Having said that - not knowing what your actual needs are - it's very difficult to make a responsible recommendation.

    I'm not asking for recommendation, just want some clarification and explanation as to the different varieties of docks. Once I understand, I can then choose one myself or ask recommendations.

    if you want usb 3.0 in a dock get the 4338, if you want esata on the dock get the 4337 dock

    One thing to consider is the port replicators don't come with a power adapter while the docks do. Unless you've got extra adapters, you'll need to plug in when using the replicator and unplug when taking the notebook. It sounds kind of irritating to me.
