hi, i purchased a y500 listed as spares / repair, just needed some tlc and a new screen.

i'm at the final stage of fixing it up, so far i've replaced the base cover, lid, added hdd, msata, ram and a 2nd gt 650m which i got for a bargin from thailand.

just need to fit a screen, now it didn't come with one as it was listed for spares, the confusing bit for me is i don't know if i need a 720p or 1080p screen?

as some sites say the ldvs cable needs to be for a 720p or 1080p screen (is that true or not?)

i already tried a new screen FHD B156HTN01.1 but on booting it was blank and there wasn't even the backlight from the screen active.

did get a duff screen or do i need a 720p screen?

oh and the laptop is model 9541

What's the original screen model? Look it up and see if its 768p or 1080p. If it was 1080p, you might have to replace the cable or worse.
