I understand they'll test it with a hold first, and then they'll charge it when the order ships

They'll put in an authorization for the amount when you order the system, but the action charge is not placed on the card until it ships. Net effect is your available credit will be reduced during the time between order and ship.

Well, I'm not sure if the OP was referring to a credit card or debit card (most people use the terms interchangeably), but in my case, I used a debit card to purchase a T400. There was a hold on the card for a day or so, and now its gone. My ending balance and available balance are the same.
Not sure if thats the same for everyone or if you are using a true credit card, but thats how it worked in my case.

They will put on hold to your credit card, and then charge you when shipped your order
