I bought my Lenovo T61 last summer. It started over heating in 6 months so i was annoyed and opened it to see what was wrong. The cpu fan was dead.. luckily i was still under warranty. Guess what? My computer has been slowing down recently .. alot and random components stop working on and off and I even get blue screens of death. I thought it was the video card dying as it shuts off each time i'm watching a video for awhile. So i took it apart again, and found the cpu fan to not be spinning.. AGAIN..!!!

I had my fan changed 4 times in my T61. Really don't know why it keeps dying.

Have you tried sprinkling the fans' roots with water, it's so hot down there? :p

Seriously though, guys, the only thing you can do to prevent the system from dying of overheating is to constantly monitor CPU/GPU temps. Always! Thus if you notice a sudden overheating - check the fans, clen the dust, replace the thermal compound and it should be fine.
But the number of dying fans is alarming indeed :(

Is the fan entrance facing the window? I made that mistake once.

BTW, you got the nVidia GPU?

I sit next to the window but fan faces away from it, i clean out the dust with the spray. I have a air purifier next to my laptop and I have a Antec laptop cooler.. the one with the aluminum surface too!!

When i opened it up tonite, there was practically no dust inside.

And yes I have the Nvidia GPU

Spraying it can damage the fan...
Unless you're talking about spraying it when you hold the blade.

The reason cn habs ask you if you have Nvidia Gpu is because they have cause alot of failure. They then to overheat, so the fan spin up more often causing the fan to die prematurely.

Is tpfancontrol better at monitoring temps than the third party tools like Everest, HWinfo32 etc?

not really, but you can test the health state of the fan by changing the value between 0 to 7.

It isn't good for temperature monitoring. Use coretemp, hwmonitor, etc. But as lead_org mentioned, it is useful for forcing the fan to run at various settings.
