I've ordered a disk for my T42P, whats the correct/best steps to migrate data without issues ?
i have dual boots ubuntu linux and windows xp along with the restore partition for windows from IBM originally
Thanks for the advise.

Use a program like Norton Ghost or Acronis TrueImage to directly image the drive from one to another. The software will automatically resize the partitions to fill the new disk. You can hook up the new drive as a USB drive with a dongle and boot from a CD with one of these softwares to achieve this.
EDIT: Wait sorry, did you mean a restore disk or a new HDD? I thought you meant HDD. If it's a restore disk, just copy your entire C: drive to another location and run the CD. -
ghost will replicate the same partitions into the new disk ?
but this way i will lose the extra space i have on my new disk
also any opensource softwares instead of norton ghost? -
look for a program called rawcopy. its on the ultimate boot disk if you build one. its a straight sector copy. then you can move things with gparted. all for free.

No, you won't lose the extra space on the new disk. Please re-read my post.
