does the diskkeeper in thinkpad comes with auto-defrag? (on-the-fly-defrag)

is it a good idea to uninstall it from my thinkpad x300? i heard that the diskkeeper that comes with x300 is specifically design for ssd.

sorry, can't help with the SSD angle. I finally uninstalled diskkeeper from my R61 because I couldn't get it to not automatically load... I used JKDefrag instead: small, seems effective and has no overhead when you're not using it.

Diskeeper that comes with your Lenovo is Home Edition. It does not do "on-the-fly" defrag, which requires the Professional Edition available for additional $$$.

Also, other than the visual interface, there is no difference between Diskeeper and Windows Defrag, which is based on Diskeeper. For this reason, I just use Windows Defrag rather than Diskeeper, which consumes additional system tray resources. Like Diskeeper, Windows Defrag can be set to run at regular intervals. At the end of the day, defrag is just routine maintenance!

    hmm... thanks specialista.

i just uninstalled diskkeeper then founds out that vista built-in defragmenter doesnt have view analyzed drive. so i reinstall diskkeeper again.

i decided not to defrag. based on the fact that windows 7 implement a feature that will turn off drive defrag on ssd drive. so i assume microsoft dont think defrag is good for ssd.

    thank you guys :)

The Diskeeper that ships with the Lenovo edition is some older version (IIRC, it was v.9 on my old N100) and is stripped of certain features. I think the X300 ships with a version tweaked for SSDs.

However, the 'full' versions of Diskeeper (i.e. 2009 Home, Pro currently) etc, have been and are very different from the Windows defragger. They run with fewer resources, but work far better at defragging and have all the features enabled.

The XP defragger on the other hand, is another highly crippled Diskeeper ver 3 or something that Microsoft licensed from the company.
