I followed the Vista Tweaks thread and disabled a few services, not all the recommended ones because I was trying to be conservative. Anyway, I go to download Google toolbar and Skype and my download speed in slooooow, like 5-10 kb/sec. IE works but pages load somewhat slowly.
Sound familiar to anyone? I'm trying to get this new x61s with Vista Business to run a little smoother and all i get is problems. Any recs for a particular service that would affect the download speed like this? Nothing in task manager shows excessive CPU usage.

Re-enable everything you disabled.
Add more RAM and it will be smooth -
What JCMS said. The beauty of tweaks is that if they have a negative side effect, you can just undo.

I re-enabled the few services that I disabled, turned on a couple Windows Features that I turned off, and still as slow as dial-up. Don't know what to do. This is my first experience with Vista and it sucks. I'm back up to over 85 processes running. I should be OK with 2 Gig RAM, shouldn't I?
The only programs I uninstalled so far are Norton, Picasa, Lenovo Registration, Windows Live Toolbar. I disabled TMM (for external monitor), turned UAC off, adn disabled from startup Message Center and Bluetooth services, since I don't have any bluetooth devices. The HD won't stop running.
I need some help asap because I'm supposed to ship this thing to my fiancee i NYC tomorrow and she doesn't know jack about computers so it has be able to run OK, mainly for internet use. She's gonna kill me for f'in with it! -
You got a recovery DVD?
You should be having about 60 processes... -
I just did a factory restore from RR a few hours ago, made the minor changes noted above, and now reset most back to how they were. IE still slow as hell. The task manager has settled down to processes in the mid-70's but the HD hasn't stopped, and I noticed that when I restart, the CPU numbers are all over the place for at least a few minutes. -
I haven't touched the processes since my fresh install, and I've got 55 going. You seriously should do a clean install.

I reverted back to Normal Startup mode in Sytem Configuration, still no luck. Then I was unable to get a IE page to load on my other lappy and my desktop. I unplugged the power to my linksys router, plugged it back in and now everything is flying. Go figure.

EDIT: See you posted the answer while I was typing... glad you got it figured out. Routers (and broadband modems) will do that occasionally.
2GB of ram should do great for her purpose.

I would like to do a clean install, but I think I'm just going to leave it alone. It really can't get any faster than it is now, which was the goal. I don't care how much crapware is loaded, if it's flying then mission accomplished.
I actually just ordered Corsair 4G memory (2x2G) to replace the two 1Gig sticks in here. Might not do much.

Still, the amount of processes you have running is uncool.
download speeds are weak after Vista tweak
