i just bought a t43p with 1gb of ram on it and was planning on getting another 1gb of ram (crucial) to install afterwards. can i run them in dual channel? the latency, speed, etc... is identical, save for brand. thanks all.

    edit:
i've read that the included dvd burner on the ibm isn't that great. is it just slow, or prone to produce coasters? has anyone bought the nec nd-6650 and installed it? (fits flush / properly?)

There is no problem mixing different brands of ram of the same speed. So have at it and the cheapest ram available.

It is slow, but I haven't seen it produce a coaster yet (not that I've burnt so many disks on it, I'd say maybe 10-20...) I have seen it fail to read a DVD-R that has been perfectly readable on other DVD drives once.

As long as the RAM is identical to one another and the motherboard supports dual channeling, you should be fine. Not sure if this possible for you, but I also read that buying two pieces of RAM (both modules) at the same time, as to get them from the same batch made, also helps the scenerio. Very little changes, even just the person(s) making the product, can have an effect on RAM made x day and same RAM made y day. Thus getting from the same batch (extremely similar serial numbers to prove this) is ideal.

i'll go with the crucial from newegg. if it doesn't work in dual channel, i'll have it refunded and buy the other 1gb stick direct from ibm. thanks all :)

CPU-Z is freeware. Google it and you'll find it. The Panasonic burners offered on ThinkPads are not very good. They are slow, picky on media and burn quality is sub-par. Unfortunetly they are the only ones that will fit in the bay. They are 9.5mm in height whereas the rest of industry with a few exceptions uses 12.7mm height drives. If you want to use the NEC, you'll have to get an external case. That is what I did for the 6500. I leave the battery in the bay. Good Luck.

I'm sure there will be tons of boxing day sales on such things as laptop bags. Not the hottest item in the store but you never know. What kind of accessories are you looking for on a laptop bag? Targus makes nice, all-around laptop bags.

a backpack big enough that i can fit my camera equipment (2 bodies and 3 lenses) or a messenger style bag that's pretty secure when i'm cycling.
