I've been reading the DIY eGPU experiences thread but it's hard to know the timeline of the most recent and most stable experiences with a particular model. Anyone who has or had an eGPU with their x220, I want to know how easy or "plug and play" it is now that I'm reading about updated BIOS and "x2" expresscard which is faster than the x1.

How stable is it once you get it setup? I ask because I am looking to gift it to my brother and ideally would want it to work once I setup everything and not have him have to fix things or work with weird quirks like going into bios every time you boot to choose settings, etc.

If the eGPU with the x220 works by just turning on the eGPU and the computer, plugging it in, then that's fine. It would be better if there was hot plugging without having to restart the computer or issues with sleep but the older threads indicate you can't do that. Has this changed?

Also I thought the Pe4H was the older and slower version of the PE4L but I'm not sure because they have different versions. Which one is the best and newest, most stable one?
