i'm thinking of purchasing the basic of all IBM - R51. i've heard of the great reputation and form factors of all IBMs and was wondering if the extended warranty is worth it?

our standard answer on this is generally no. if a notebook is going to break, it'll likely do it in the first few months and be covered under the 1-year warranty. companies usually make money on extended warranties.
however, if you really like having a security blanket of warranty and you are a totally risk averse person and are willing to pay for it, it's okay to get the warranty so you sleep easier at night. -
You can extend your 1 year warranty to 3 yeaars for around $100. I agree that many problems do happen within the first 3-6 months, but a systemboard or lcd failure anytime after the first year will cost 5-8 times the cost of the warranty to repair. Besides, with all the jostling around a laptop goes through, harddrives and cdrom's are the most common thing to fail. As long as their is no evidence of drop damage your warranty will always cover cdrom and hd replacement.
Be sure to buy the extended warranty through IBM themselves, do NOT buy an in store warranty. You will have nothing but headaches if you ever have to use it. IBM's extended warranties can be added after purchasing your machine, as long as you buy it before the standard warranty expires.

I agree with Andrew and Djay,
usually if it lasts the 1st year it will last the whole 3 years or more; and don't buy an instore warranty, only get one from IBM or whoever is the manufacturer. Another good idea is to get a personal articles insurance policy (not a rider in any way related to a homeowners or renters policy) you can get one from statefarm for about $4o/year for $2000 of coverage and it will cover theft or any kind of loss or damage except acts of war of general component failure.
For more information do a search for insurance and my user name bootleg2go in these forums.
good luck
