i want to get an external display for my thinkpad t400/ati3470 with minimal additions (i.e. prefer not to have to get a docking station, etc.).

i just want to hook up a monitor to the vga port, and use the larger external display, preferably 22-24 inches.

i'd have preferred a 16:10 display to a 16:9 for the extra vertical space, but i don't it seems that within the same price range, i'd be looking at a 16:10 that's 1650x1050 or a 16:9 that's 1920x1080...so really, the 16:9 would have slightly more vertical space.

so i'm wondering, have any of you hooked up a 1920x1080 display to your t400/ati3470 laptops, does it work and is it clear? any suggestions for a display that is adjustable, because i'm killing my neck looking down at the notebook display.

Yes, the VGA output will be fine. The quality is going to be more a factor of the VGA input quality on the monitor itself. There are plenty of adjustable options. The Dell 24inch ultrasharps tend to go on sale here and there and are a pretty good value considering the pricing now.

oh that dell ultrasharp does look like a nice piece of technology, but at 400-700 it's kind of cost prohibitive.

though i just found a local posting on craigslist for the 22 inch ultrasharp, 4 months old, guy's switching to a laptop so he doesn't watn the monitor anymore, max res 1650x1050 for 160 canadian.

i'm also looking at a new asus 24 inch 16:9 at 1920x1080, but it's like 230+tax. this vid card should be able to support either of these resolutions, shouldn't it? you've got a syncmaster 20 inch, 204B, right?

don't worry even integrated graphics card can support these resolutions. But if you want to play game at that resolution then it is a different story.
