Well right now i am torn between chosing a proper laptop for myself. the possible choices are t61p and asus g1s-a1. I was going to get an asus to begin with, but love the solid build of thinkpads.

What i am worried about is gaming performance of NVIDIA Quadro FX 570M chip. Do any thinkpad owners here do any sort of serious gaming on these laptops, or have any review web sites done any gaming benchmarks?

Another serious question is, which video memory is used by lenovo right now? GDDR3 or GDDR2?

The Quadro 570m is the same GPU as an 8600m GT and will perform roughly the same give or take a little depending on what drivers you're using. The version in the T61p uses GDDR3 memory (info from Kevin's T61p review here on NBR).

So yes, I would definitely say the T61p has enough GPU power to be a nice notebook for playing games. :D

Not "just" enough...the T61p has the most power of any 15.4" or smaller size notebook. The recently announced Alienware m15x should be faster, but it's not out yet, and will also likely be more expensive and larger. You'd have to buy a 17" or larger notebook (like the Dell XPS 17") to find a GPU with more power. Check out http://www.notebookcheck.net to see for yourself, it's an awesome site for gamers looking for the best gaming notebooks.

From personal experience, my T61p runs WoW at max settings pretty darn well, averaging 53fps with 1x multisampling at 1680x1050 resolution. It runs the Orange Box games very well too, though they heat it up a ton. I run TF2 at lower-than-native resolution, for guaranteed high framerate, and some of the HDR options disabled, for improved game visibility.

Keep in mind, the 14" T61p has a 64-bit bus, meaning it runs games significantly slower than the 15.4" (with its 128-bit bus). And yes, the 15.4" model does use GDDR3 memory, running the GPU at 475 MHz and the memory at 702 MHz (with PowerMizer disabled). That's lots better than the Vostro 1500 with the nVidia 8600GT (basically the same GPU as the 570M), which uses GDDR2 memory at significantly lower clock frequency.

Agreed, its more powerful than I expected. I can play Crysis with all med settings and a decent resolution and experience little to no slowdowns, and COD 4 with all high settings at a descent resolution with no slowdowns. (I used those crysis drives though, in another thread)

    I say go for it!
