I just got this for $20. It uses the "combo/esata" port on your thinkpad to power SATA devices. Most esata cables only connect to the drives with no way of powering them. By using the combo port, USB powers it in the same cable.

    I made a little write-up.

Fortysomething Geek: USB shared ESATA to SATA cable.

Btw. there are 'SATA 13pin' cables on ebay (about $1-10), that can be used to connect Thinkpad's DVD drive, or Ultrabay HDD caddy, to the eSATA+USB port.

and those seam sata II not sata III.
also on ebay you can get usb3.0 AND esata to sata III cables.
and there are more notebooks on earth with esata then just thinkpads

Great read mr 40something geek. I also read your other articles and its nice to see someone fully utilizing thinkpads, linux, macs, iOS and android devices.

Sadly; my laptop doesn't have a combo port.

These are dumb cables. If eSATA port and the drive are SATA III, it will work at SATA III speeds. But at least in xx20 series eSATA was SATA II only.

Are there? With names appropriate to mention in Lenovo/IBM forum ? :)
