Ok, so my laptop (t61p) turns on, but won't boot up. I ran a scan and it shows my hard drive surface scan failed. Guess my hard drive is dead. Is there any way i can recover my data from it? I already called lenovo and got a new hard drive on the way. Any recommendations before i plug that one in?

if Lenovo is shipping the HDD it should already have the same image as your unit was shipped with...

Could you be a little more descriptive? Saying it didn't work tells me nothing.

I can't believe that Lenovo ships a replacement drive with no image, since they decided to stop shipping repair disks and instead use a partition on the hard drive to recover your OS. This really is Catch 22 logic. You can burn RR disks, but many people prefer not to, since they would have to carry the disks with them when traveling, in order to recover the system (since Lenovo also nicely removes the option to use the partition after you make a set of recovery disks). So they send you a blank HDD, knowing that they also denied you a set of recovery disks when purchased? Call Lenovo support. I am relatively sure that they will send you a set of disks free, and hopefully will also act embarassed about these predatory practices...

I don't understand what you are talking about. One is still able to use the recovery partition after the recovery discs are burned.

Well, there's nothing on the hard drive, just plank. There's no operating system. I tried using my recovery disc from which i burned from the first hard drive, but it said there were files missing. I'll check again and see what it all says when the screen pops up.

Yes, call Lenovo tech support instead of customer service and explain the situation. They will send you recovery disks for free and overnight them to boot.
