I can confirm the same happens on my new T61 running Vista Business. The HD activity light blinks and/or stays solid green for a good minute after I've logged in. I haven't figured out why it's doing that but I'll worry about that after I've done a clean install of either Vista Business or XP.

It's most likely one of the million background processes Vista has like SuperFetch, I suppose for optimizing performance once the computer is up.

Vista related, some programs are opened up on a delayed start.

    It's both.

Lenovo is activating lots of bloatware during boot/logon. What you are reporting is very normal.

Yup, you can also disable the pre-fetch or file indexing to stop the hard drive thrashing

I would say that's normal. Vista will free up RAM as needed; a clean install probably won't help much. All it's doing is using available RAM efficiently, and it does improve system performance.
Try running a memory hogging game or program and look at your RAM usage during and afterwards and you'll see what I mean.
