All else being equal (same 5400rpm HD, no dedicated graphics, etc in each) which of these do you think will result in less heat, specifically the coolest palmrest?
1.66GHz in 168 cubic inches vs 1.8GHz in 141 cubic inches
Hotter processor in less volume makes it seem a no brainer, but does anyone think the new cooling system on the T61 will compensate enough to make it the cooler system?

They actually had a T60 15.4" in best buy this morning with a T5500- and if you can believe this- when I asked the guy what time they turn on all the display models in the morning (they had just opened)- he said they don't! They get left on all night!! I called bs, but he insisted that's what they do. A few other displays were indeed pretty warm just idling. Can you believe they do that though, never shut them down? I still call bs, but remind me never to buy a display or open box item at BB.
Anyways that thing was literally cool to the touch, top and bottom.
Really, I'm just scared of palmrest heat. If I knew that part would at least not get warm on the t61, I wouldn't sweat it and jsut get the 14". I know since most of you are loading them with really hot processors, graphics, and the 7200rpm hd's, and if it's designed to handle all that, I;m hoping it'll be cool at entry level specs.
Unless I'm the only Gina whne it comes to heat, and you guys just accept it in a notebook. Im just scarred ever since I got burned by a 14.1" toshiba with only a 1.86GHz (P-M) that literally made my palm sweat. I dumped it immediately.
Anyone know where they might have a t61 in a B&M store I could check out? I guess if it's too hot to for my liking, I can always just take the 15% hit and return it. Only would lose that and shipping one way since shipping is free to get here. -
Comparing the processor speed and the volume of a notebook is not the best way to investigate the heat produced. Each and every notebook has its own cooling system, and it is that which determines how how the notebook will be. Cooling systems are usually better in larger notebooks, with them emplying either more surface area for their heatsinks, or having more heatpipes.

Yeah, there's loose correlation at least w/volume, among notebooks in the same line, both being T series, but of course it's not the ultimate determination (hence the thread).
Everyuone seems to think hotter processor in the smaller space will be cooler- guess they are believers in the new cooling system... or are just telling me what I want to hear! -
Well ordered the t61. HOpe you guys are right.
Since I learned that if you send back in for exchange (instead of refund), no restocking fee. So if it's too warm for me, I can always exchange for 15.4.
heat? t60 15.4 1.66GHz vs t61 14.1 1.8GHz
