Before you do anything else you should clean your heatsink's fins(you should blow them clean every 2 months or so). Some say that you need to immobilize the fan so it does not spin freely when you do this. If this does not solve your overheating problem you can get one of those pads with fans built in to rest the laptop on.
    I hope this helps.

If you look at the rear/side of your laptop you will see exhaust vents. Behind the vent is your heatsink which can get dirty over time and loose it's effectiveness. Cleaning it regularly restores it to it's intended state.

Search the web, you can download the official service guides to pretty much any ThinkPad. Also you can usually buy them in paper form. They have a few errors though (they should be enumerated when you by/download it, so go though with a pen and fix the mistakes).

Oh, and all modern CPUs have built in thermometers on die. Also, any decent computer has other thermos on the HD, FSB, a couple places for ambient case temp and some even have ambient room temp thermos on the outside (although that's rare because low temp semiconductor thermos are expensive). Do a search for the programs that can read the information, usually a system status meter can do it.

Also, many new BIOSs can be programmed to immediately shut down the computer if a thermometer goes above a certain temp. I'm pretty sure that the thinkpad BIOS can do this and it might even be able to do more advanced ACPI functions other than "quick, turn it off!" It's a good idea to set these to a temp that should never be reached in real life under proper operating conditions yet still below the damage temp of the component.

There are other programs, but you might try the free program PC Wizard from CPUID HERE. It gives temps, as well as a tremendous amount of other info, and some benchmarks. You can download an installation file, or a ZIP file you can use to run it without installing anything.
