Hi, a few weeks ago I posted about my X201 being warmer than it was before. a bios downgrade did not work, and neither was it a rogue process. So today I reapplied the thermal paste, and tested it. The thermal paste i used was Arctic cooling MX-3

under maximum load (prime 95) it stabilized at 90*c (no downclocking)

the moment i killed prime 95 temps dropped like a rock and finally stabilized at 40*c when idle (clock at 1190, occasionally going up to 2381 and 2534)

is this considered good or normal? would be grateful if other X201 owners could post their temps, my config is in my sig.

    cheers

I think that's pretty good temperature for a 35W CPU inside a 12" laptop. Have you tried LinX discussed in this thread?

for X201 with i5 and i7 CPU, this considered within the normal range. Usually around 85 too 90 degrees are about the maximum.

Obviously the variation would depend on the ambient temperature and how clean your heat sink is (also proper thermal paste is replaced).

Why did they put a full voltage processor in a tiny 3lb ultraportable !! lol

well that is what the customer wanted, but no all full voltage processors are the same. One reason why i didn't get the X201 to replace my X200 was due to the fact that the i5 and i7 CPU produced more heat than the X200.

But a point of reminder the X220 also have full voltage CPU options.

i bought the x201 because i got a fantastic ebay deal on a 6 month old unit in mint condition with a 3 year warranty. was originally planning to get the X120e, but after adding all the options i wanted it came up to just under $600 and i got the X201 for $650

it definitely feels like its back to its usual cool self...but what could have cause it to rise in temp so suddenly (over a period of a couple of weeks)? the stock thermal paste cant have gone bad can it? there was also no dust in the unit, so it couldnt have been dust
