something new is starting to happen with my t60....

it never did this before - in fact it was silent. the laptop has less than 30 hours on it total.

there's a very faint but annoying and high-pitched "electricity" sound coming from the laptop. I can't tell if it's related to hard drive activity or not. it goes away for 15 or so seconds, then comes back on. it stutters on and off a lot.

anyone else had this issue before?

its probably the notorious CPU whine issue. Does it happen while running on AC or battery? Does it go away if wireless is off? Try disabling power management for your usb devices.

wireless on or wireless off same deal - also happens in either battery or ac mode....

...however, now that i think about it, i did change the power management settings on the usb ports (make it so they can't be turned off, since I do live music production)... i'll see if it goes away if i re-enable power management.

5 minutes into changing the usb power management back to turning ON power management ("allow computer to turn off this device to save power"). i don't hear the whining right now. i can still hear some very faint whines coming form inside the computer, but I'm guessing those were there before and I never noticed them. I literally have to get within a foot of the laptop now to hear some whining.

i'm not sure if this solved the problem. I think it might have. i'll keep you updated, though..... thanks for the awesome advice :)

btw, if it helps in diagnosing the problem, the room has to be DEAD SILENT for me to have heard the whine. I wouldn't even hear it in a library, but in a quite bedroom you could hear it. sounded like when you get that "electricity" sound from a TV in the other room being on....

:) so far so good - might be all it needed. thanks!
