I heard that many thinkpad owners prefer the trackpoint instead of the touchpad. I've tried it but found it to be very awkward. So I'm asking what fingers do you use for each of the 3 buttons under the space bar and for the trackpoint?

Index finger on the trackpoint and thumb resting on the left click button.

If I'm typing, right index finger on the Trackpoint and right thumb on right buttons, left thumb on left button. The middle button gets whichever thumb i feel like at that time. If I'm not typing, then I usually use just my right hand for all of it, though sometimes if i'm leaning on my right hand or it is otherwise occupied, I use my left hand for all of it. If i'm not typing, i rarely use both hands to work the trackpoint/buttons.

speed-controllable scrolling with the middle trackpoint button is one of the minor joys of life
I generally use my right index finger on the trackpoint and my right thumb for the buttons. -
I dont think index finger with the track point will create comfortable feeling. Well, at least within my experience.
I am using MIDDLE finger at the trackpoint and thumb for the rest of three buttons. It give me enough distance to travel. Middle finger also have adequate power to control the trackpoint.
When i am using index finger there is a lot of pressure in the index and thumb area of my hand. It is imbalanced from the rest of the hand. Middle finger create balancing pressure of the whole hand. -
I set mine up to scroll.

i use my left pointing finger. my left hand types on 4-diagonal letters (4X4=16) from Q to R and down... then the other hand types on the right side characters and numbers. i use my left thumb for space bar.
i scroll with the trackpoint.
so its just left pointing finger in the eraser, left thumb on the three buttons. that makes the space between the two fingers unnoticable (in the case of sapibobo using middle + thumb combination, i tried that but its hard) -
has anyone ever used their trackpoint on an rts game?
-
that would be pretty hard if you use trackpoint in an rts game.
i even tried once playing with it in BF2142... and i crashed my the car several times in the posts -
But, yeah, using it in a game is definitely feasible.

After only a few days of using the trackpoint I got so used to it that I disabled the touchpad. The scroll function of the trackpoint is really nice. Another advantage over the touchpad is that I don't accidentally click and drag items (which resulted in copying them) anymore. I found that the index-thumb combination is the best.
