for example, if I have 14in XGA with a discreet video chipset vs. integrated graphics, will the colors/vividness be the same or better on the PC with dedicated/discreet video?

No, the discrete graphics will only affect whether your computer can run 3d intensive software.

Battery life is also an issue with discrete vs integrated.

Go with Discrete, trust me. You'll thank me later, itll kill battery life but it is SOOOO worth it.

How is it worth it? Can you give examples of where this is beneficial and areas where it doesn't matter?

It is worth it if you're into gaming or need to do CAD or similar. If you're only using your notebook for surfing the web, running office and similar you shouldn't notice any difference (apart from battery life/heat)

I use google sketchup to visually demonstrate ideas. I have a t60p with the v5250 card, and I had to turn off hardware acceleration in sketchup to make it run faster!?!?

I had an x30 (integrated graphics) that I loaded ProE on, it took 4 minutes to load the program after clicking the icon. On my t60p it took about 7 seconds.

    strange how these things work.
