Should I get the W520 (quad core + 2000m) for photoshop and premiere or are there cheaper and better options on the market today?

While there are cheaper notebooks that run Photoshop and Premiere, choosing the W520 would be the perfect candidate if you take your photo and video editing work seriously. The W520 with Quad Core option should have ample of power to run these applications with ease and the FHD screen can be a real gem for doing colorful design work and also having the higher resolution screen helps increase the workspace on the desktop.

Occasionally with coupon codes you can get the W520 for not much over (or cheaper even) than the T520 despite its power and upgrade potential which is why it's a popular choice on this forum.

I'd also like to know. I can tell you that with CS4 it can't edit 1080p H.264 video without crashing. CS5 apparently is much better since it has H.264 decoders, but I don't have that program.

If you want the older 16:10, you could look at a W701, still offered with i7 quad core, WUXGA and will handle PS nicely. Though W series is Lenovo's Mobile workstation, competing with Dell's Precision line and HP's Elitebook, you need to ask yourself are you using your laptop for real professional work? If so, you'll want to highly consider a mobile workstation. Most of them offer RGBLED screens, which have much higher color gamut than a normal WLED screen, and some offer IPS which offers much better viewing angles than a TN panel.

The new HP Workstation line offers the 1080p IPS screen I believe ( which is awesome of course ), but damn are they hideous.

HP lead designer must have been on GRACK!

Well gentlemen, form meets function. If you need XX Elitebook, then you need it. Dell also offers the M4600, 15.6" widescreen mobile workstation with an RGBLED + IPS FHD screen for ~450-550. You can score M4600 for 1100 or less after coupons for the base model and upgrade up.

i would go with the M4600 option with the IPS LCD, and get the ATI Eyefinity graphics card.

I have never actually found a working coupon for a configurable M4600... could you point one out as I would be interested in looking at these again if I can score a decent config for under 1600 (like I can with the B&N w520).

To answer your question - CS5 works very well. A W520 (as I configured mine) is over kill.

It uneeded but I have other uses for it.
