    i am going to college this semster and i need a good portable and powerful laptop to carry around all day and sometimes take notes in class ( i will commute 45 mins everyday). Now i have a 15.6 hp and i think is too big to carry around, not that heavy but big. I found a good deal for the y460 and it looks like what i need, but how portable and heavy its is? like it is to carry around all day? how is the battery life when i am just surfing the web and writing a paper?
    what about the t420?

    thank you and please let me know if you know any deals or coupon for these models or if you think there are better models

    What kind of battery life do you need? If your university is like mine and doesn't offer outlets in lecture halls, do consider a T420 instead because it has a very long battery life. I can't imagine the Y460 lasting more than 4hrs. Personally, I think my W520 is portable enough to be carrying around (I plan on carrying a backpack, and from what I've experienced so far with carrying it in a backpack, it is portable enough).

    how much of a difference if you there is between the w520 and y460, because now i really feel uncomfortable with the dv6t(but thats just me) and i really don't like the 13" screen, so i was looking for something more portable. 4/5 hours of battery are fine

    T420 = 2nd gen i-core, Y460 = 1st gen i-core. 2nd gen i-core is more powerful and more power efficient.

    Are you really looking at the Y460 or the Y470?

    Can compare specs at Sandby Bridge notebooks for an eGPU for size/dimensions. If you're looking at maximum battery life then compare:

    - battery Whr? (more = more battery life)
    - is there a SSD? (if yes = more battery life)
    - does it have switchable graphics with an iGPU? (yes = more battery life)
    - what is the LCD size? (smaller = less power)

    Many of these systems have the same cpu, chipset, and LED backlit so use similar amounts of power with same optimizations.

    I'd have to agree that a 14" is more portable, and I would've gotten a T420 if it wasn't for the sale that happened. I believe the W520 should be roughly the same size as the DV6t, but it is around 6lb so it is not light for its screen size. I'm guessing that if weight isn't an issue, a Y470 should be about as portable as a T420, or any other 14" system for that matter.
