I set the power scheme to 'power source optimized'. however, it won't automatically do the switch when I plug/unplug the ac.

What do you mean by it won't do the switch? Does the screen dim when you unplug?

Power Source Optimized uses full brightness for AC and DC It's pretty hard to tell the difference.

    Power manager should do it.
