I've ordered an on-the-cheap x61 and i'm getting it eventually (I hope).
Ive read the tutorial on doing a clean xp install and, as the title suggests, it seems a bit over complicated to me.
In the past, i've copied all the applicable driver executables to a usb key, put in the xp disc (i have an oem), and blasted away. This has worked marvels with dells, but is there something different about lenovos that makes me unable to do this?
Also, has lenovo solved their supply and shipping problems that i keep on hearing about? I'm making the jump between dell and lenovo
-
well, i always do what you used to do... so idk.... id assume do what you've always done

i was thinking about my oem disc. Would the fact that it is a dell oem disc cause any problems with lenovo laptops? Hardware is semi-universal-ish, no?

As long as that CD installs ONLY XP and you have a product key, then you should be good to go. Please refer to the guide in my signature for a clean installation for ThinkPads. Although I configured it for T61, here are the drivers for your X61: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-67971
Clean installations on ThinkPads are one of the easiest to perform. Lenovo, like Dell, puts all their drivers on their websites also. -
its a dell oem, actually, so theres technically no product key. Thank you for the links. I'm just awaiting arrival =(
are there still shipping problems? -

thats good. thats good.
I ordered it on 1 December. Any chance of getting it before the 23rd?
It is customed, if it's not immediately obvious -
You can try my guide here if you like. Not that complicated, just a few things that need to be installed.

yes i understand the driver thing. now about the AHCI, i need that in compatible mode to install correctly right?
Also, chances of it arriving before the 23rd? -
hard to tell, but i'd think it would arrive before the 23rd

i've read the clean install xp tutorial and it seems overly complicated?
