Would it be better to get one of these new chips or revert back to the Pxxxx series?

The y550P is just bit more expensive than an upgraded y550 right now...

What advantages or disadvantages would one expect from the two? In terms of power consumption, heat, noise, etc....

    Thanks!!

If you use CPU intensive programs then the i7 could easily be 100% faster than the C2D, else you might not notice much difference if you're not maxing it out. The C2D will give you better battery life if you travel a lot and also be cooler and have less noise (since it consumes less power).

Might want to check out this thread with a rundown on processors and some discussion on the i7:

Frankly, if the price is very close I'd be tempted to go with the i7 just because it's nice to have the latest and greatest. Also, if you're a gamer or power user you might be able to use the extra power. However, if the price is > $100 and you're concerned about battery life, Core 2 Duo is probably the way to go.
