Trying to understand the differences between higher end previous gen processors and the newer processors. Which of these two listed is more powerful?

    i7.

There are 2 i7 ranges, one dual core, the other quad.

I would expect that even the dual core, with its hyperthreading and higher clock speed would outperform the Q9000.

    Look for sites this this.

In the laptop space, the i5-520M seems to be pretty much even with the Q9000. Being the i5-520M is a dual core 2.4Ghz with turbo, I suspect that just about any flavor of i7 with a base speed of 2.4Ghz or above is going to be faster as well.
