I'm prolly going with the X201 and am wondering if it's better to get the i5 cpu because of heat and battery life. Anyone got an opinion?

CPU upgrades are rarely worth it since there is minimal increase in performance for the cost. With faster speed, there is always an increase in heat and battery life w/ the same cooling system.

There should be little difference in heat output between the i5 and i7 dual core CPU.

At peak usage, the i7 may run a bit hotter, but it won't be too significant of a difference. That said, however, for 95% of users, I would recommend not getting the i7, since you won't need it. The i5 is far more power than you'll need on a day to day basis, unless you have certain specific program needs.

I'll go with the i5. I'm not doing any heavy lifting with this but light and fast is good.

i5 and i7 dual core are essentially the same cpu, apart from the different L3 cache and slightly higher turboboost ability.

If i am you i would get the cheapest i5 i could get my hands on. This represents the best bang for your bucks..

Get only the duo core version of the cpu, it's will run a lot cooler than the quad core version.

There is no quad core processor option for the X201... the i7-620M and the i7-640M (basically, the i7-6x0M series) is dual core.
