my son is in his first year at college and his current laptop (at four years old) is proving to be inadequate in terms of speed and storage. Which ibm notebook would you recommend for a computer science major that will last him at least three years? I am looking to spend under $1500 if possible. Thanks for the input.

Well, the IBM ThinkPad T42 would be a very nice laptop for a Computer Science student...I used a ThinkPad while doing CS in college and it was great and if I were there now I'd be using a T42. The T42 is expensive though, so the ThinkPad R51 is a close match in performance and specs but cheaper in price so might want to start with looking at that.

I would get him the R40 model # 2897GAU, you will need to search the net to find one as they were recently..last week discontinued, but they still may be in stock. It runs ~ $1600 and has 1.5Ghz PM, 256MB memory, 60GB hard drive, wireless, 15" display and more. It really is a great PC for students...Plus 6.2 hours battery life. If you can't find one, look at www.newegg.com and look at the thinkpads there, they usually have many for under $1500-$1600

did you try out the link 'ibm for higher education institutions' in the ibm web site.
There if you choose 'shop now' link it leads to a page with a list of states and also a link for students... 'online store'.
The online store gives you around 15% discount.
Also check in the state link (example 'florida') where your son is going to go to college...u might hit upon a better discount.
Also most colleges have computer shops or other options for buying laptops at discounted rates.
If your son is going to OSU(ohio) then you have hit a jackpot..
