its my first IBM and i was more than excited to get this machine...but things are happening that didn't happen to my dell....

first a sqeaky 's' key, dead pixels, sound stops working, battery dropped 80% overnight with it on hibernate and i get this error two times [computer is <14 days old]
    http://oca.microsoft.com/en/response.aspx?SGD=43f6e56d-75f1-4d25-917a-79dd55ada517&SID=10

but just now was the straw that may have broke the camel's back.

i had PC-cillin on the computer, just purchased NOD32.
    uninstall PC-cillin
download NOD and open the .exe
goes through set-up, asks me to restart, i do
when i come back everything seems normal, i get a NOD graphic and then nothing, i wait for another min, still nothing. then i try to click on the NOD icon on the taskbar, nothing happens. go to start, nothing happens. i ctrl + alt+ del to restart, but it takes like 30s for it to recognize my mouse click. it restarts, same thing happens, than again and again.

i now booted and hit the thinkvantage, which is where i am now. anyone have a suggestion?

good think my trusty dell was here so i could get online....[that hurt more to write than it does to read]

Ok Hibernate does NOT use battery as the notebook is completely turned off, so thats pretty much impossible unless you "think" it was hibernate, only stand-by uses battery but 80% overnight is still a lot.

Make sure 100% of the Symantec/Norton AV crap is off the computer. There are so many little bits and pieces to it, that unless it is all removed, you will have errors happening with 2 AV programs going together.

So many of the quirky software issues revolve around some of the extra software IBM likes to throw on the new computers. I usually remove every bit of software, and build up with only the stuff I want. This is a bit easier than formatting and installing from your own winxp disc, and only takes maybe 30 minutes and a handful of restarts to get rid of everything. Once that was done, my machines blazed.

With the dead pixels, where are they? Are they white dots near the center of the screen? If so, you are probably just seeing some of the odd trackpoint dots that show up with the synaptics software. They usually go away if you press one of the 3 trackpoint buttons, usually pressing the middle one does the trick.

But that NOD not installing right sounds a heck of a lot like running 2 AV setups at the same time. One of my sisters friends had Norton and university required mcafee AV going on her HP laptop, and even with 2 gigs of ram, dual hard drives, and a 3ghz prescott processor the thing could barely function with 2 IE windows open. It was horrible. Uninstalling the crap took such a long time, but when it was finally all off the system, it was night and day the way it acted.

With the keyboard, chances are if it is having issues it was one of the lesser versions, and you can just call up IBM to send out a replacement for you. Takes about 10 minutes to swap out, and a small torx screwdriver. They usually send em out overnight, so you might even get a replacement early this week :)

Forgot to mention, how many cycles has your battery gone through, and have you done full charges.. or bits here and there?

Newer batteries take a while to fully build of there capacity, and might be the reason to the power drop overnight. Another thing is if you charge it in little bursts here and there, once the thing gets over a certain level ~90, when unplugged then plugged back in.. it will report as full charge until it drops below a certain level, then will charge to 100%.

Of course, if that doesn't go away, and keeps dropping drasically overnight (with computer shut down), then you may have a problem. Hopefully you just had it in standby, and not hibernate or fully shutoff.

Go through the list and revmove anything relating to the word "Symantec" or "Norton". Another is removing almost anything in the add/remove software area, and starting fresh.

If you never plan on using anything relating to security, just wipe all the IBM stuff.

i had taken all norton off when i got it...then put on PC-Cillin, then took that off and tried to install NOD when this all happened.
i just went through rescue/recovery to install windows again, but once i do i get another blue screen message and it only allows me to boot in safe mode.

i don't really have anything of value on the computer yet...no files i need. just programs that will need to be installed...should i set my HD back to the day i got it?

Which rescue/recovery are you referring to? The windows one, or the IBM full recovery?

If you haven't tried it yet, do the full wipe and recover in the Thinkvantage recovery setup.

im talking about hitting the thinkvantage button as soon as i reboot, when i go the recovery i have 3 options, restore HD from a back-up [which i have], restore windows, and restore back to factory default.

i've tried to restore windows twice. nothing is working. im getting ready to re-install HD...or maybe i should just get on the phone...or can they not even help because this is obviously software related?

Might also be worth noting that the Micron bad ram batch might be playing a part in this.

Also, use your other computer to download a copy of knoppix, burn the cd, and use the utility "Smartctl" to see if maybe your HD is bad or throwing errors. A dead/dying drive with tons of bad sectors can really throw some odd stuff at you.

Basically boot the knoppix disc, when loaded press "Alt+f3" to get to a console, then type "smartctl -a /dev/sda" and look at the log dump to see if there are any errors or other items that stick out.
