Windows 2003 and XP almost always have universally interchangeable drivers. Back when i was running that combination, drivers always worked for either. I never found a driver, assuming it was WHQL for XP that would not be qualified for 2003, as well (ie, no forced driver installs, no driver installation complain messages).

Same goes with Vista and 2008, 7 and 2008 R2. The kernel versions are actually the same between the 3 groupings. I attribute that mostly as to why you can interchange them. That goes for either 32-bit or 64-bit versions, too. Really the only exception is going to be if the installer blocks it if it sees 2003 instead of XP. But the T400 specifically, and knowing what drivers are there, I highly doubt that will be the case.

The bigger question is, why do you want to install a server operating system on a laptop???

Just a suggestion --if I was going to run Windows Server on a ThinkPad, I'd install VMWare Workstation (or if you want free, VirtualBox) and run it as a virtual machine. You're not nearly as dependent on specific drivers, and you can still run a supported operating system on your ThinkPad.

VMWare Workstation runs beautifully on my T400.

Unless of course you have a surplus of 100GB 2.5" drives. :D
