It appears that more and more notebook manufacturers are discontinuing non-Widescreen displays. It's probably cheaper to have a widescreen than a 4:3 ratio screen.

Is Lenovo following suit? Are 14.1 XGA screens being discontinued?

I can't possibly see lenovo going this route.

A good number of thinkpad's are sold for business use. Within that context, I don't see the point of widescreen and i'm hoping a lot of people agree with me. I'm a widescreen guy myself, but when it comes to email, documents, code development, and all things business-like, I can't see how widescreen would provide any positive benefit.

Widescreen does rule for gaming, watching movies, and just general leisure use (this is why i also own a macbook pro), but if you use your laptop for business use i'm sure you already know that plain jane 4:3 fulfills your needs.

I like the way things are now with lenovo, you have a choice. I'm sure the market for standard and wide definition monitors is about the same for thinkpads and will probably stay that way.

Is there a big difference between the 4:3 and WXGA screen? Is there a way to see how a webpage appears on both side by side?

    thanks.

Well, I think i'll backpedal on the not discontinuing 4:3 thing. Beyond 14", you might as well go widescreen as you got the height you need, in my opinion.

However, anything smaller, you want 4:3 as you really miss the height. I've seen one of those 12.1" (or whatever they are) sony's and the screen is just too unmanageable if you ask me.

*maybe* they discontinue 15.whatever" standard def monitors, i don't see them getting rid of the 14" though

They'll keep on cranking out 4:3 screen lappies as long as manufacturers keep on producing them. But the end does seem near.

The demand for 4:3 notebooks is dying off, even in the business sector more and more notebooks are going widescreen.

Sadly, standard screens are a dying breed. It seems less and less manufacturers are willing to produce them. I'm thankful I was able to get my 14.1" standard T61, what a wonderful machine with a perfect sized screen ;)

thanks for all responses. Now, thinking ahead, is WXGA going to have better resale value on T61's than 4:3 XGA's?

I'm also wondering to what degree Widescreens outsell 4:3 ratio screens in thinkpads?
