z61m high res 1680 is too much for me, been running it at 1440 for a couple months, is there any permanent negative effects from running an lcd at a lower res, thanks

As far as I know the answer would be no. Resolution is based on what the GPU is capable of displaying and that also factors in if the LCD supports that resolution. What can damage an LCD screen is forcing a refresh rate it can't handle.

If windows detects the screen and video card properly, it won't allow you to set a refresh rate that is unsupported by the card/screen unless you manually uncheck the hidden modes option.

So I would say the answer is yes, as long as they are modes that the screen and graphics card supports. Also, a lot of screens, if you force an unsupported refresh rate, will just not work (windows will revert after a few seconds) or in some cases the screen will display an on screen warning saying the mode is out of safe range.
