saw a good deal on a second hand unused 90w genuine lenovo ac adaptor on ebay, only thing is that its the 90w charger, not the 65w one that came with my x201.

would it work as well? cheers

Yes it should work since the adaptor end are the same, my ThinkPad systems can use either 65w or 90w but it tends to charge the battery more quickly with the 90w adaptor which is why I opted for it with my T420.

i assume they ship the 65W one with their ultraportables to keep the adaptor equally portable?

if there is no technical reason why i shouldnt get it, (i.e. shortens battery lifespan, etc) i dont mind the added size, getting this to leave in my office as a spare.

I could select either rating with my T420s. Personally, I prefer the lighter weight so I went for the 65W. I'm a little annoyed that they don't offer a PSU with a 2 pin mains connector since they have thinner and lighter power cables.

Also, although the battery charging may be slower with a lower rated PSU, the slower charge means less heat which is better for the battery.

crap, so does that mean its not good for my X201? i suppose i can always remove the battery when i reach the office.....

do you think 65w-90w will make that big a difference?

It's not a big difference. If your battery is still full or is slightly discharged then it won't be affected by the faster charge rate.

If you prefer the 65W PSU then search ebay for "40Y7696". There are a lot there.

thanks for that info. i just bought the one i was looking at. the 65w ones that came up after i tried ur search dint come close in price, the ones that do were just a few bucks cheaper but u have to buy your own cable and they were not original.
i think i got an excellent deal at 12 quid :)

i dont think the heat will be an issue after reading what you said, because putting the laptop to sleep and carrying it to the office, its probably gonna lose like 1% charge since my office is 10 mins away

X201 *will* accept a 90w. but it wont draw more than 65 off it. (like how you use to match ram or it'd run at the slower of the two, the X just has 65w assuming chips.)
