just have a few questions. newbie here in regards to notebooks. this is my very first notebook ever! should you always have the ac adapter plugged into the battery AT ALL TIMES? or just when you need to recharge it? (i know over-charging it could lead to a broken battery?) also, in regards to adding additional ram to the notebook, especially during the first year warranty, would we have to use an "IBM approved" memory module, so that we don't void the warranty? any info would be great! thanks in advance.

I believe that once the battery is full, the AC power will stop supplying power to it and it will run on purely AC power. If you still feel anxious, you could always take out the battery and just leave the AC power in and run it that way... I do that occasionally.

If it can detect wireless signals, then a wireless adapter must be present. Since the WI-FI is integrated, you do not need to go out and buy one; you already have one.

You should use your ac adapter whenever possible (don't worry, it won't ruin your battery). If you run solely on batteries all the time, you will find the charge on the battery lasting only about 30 minutes after one year. Using the adapter will prolong the battery (which you will eventually need to replace after 1 1/2 to 2 years). This has held true for the six notebooks that I have owned (NEC, Gateway, Toshiba, Dell, and IBM).

I would upgrade the RAM by purchasing through crucial. I would also buy another IBM battery through newegg. Hope this helps.

It's really up to you.
512 TOTAL is sufficient for office apps and much more.
True, the more the better, but "more" will also hit the wallet.
In fact, 256 is enough for office apps... but 512 is ideal.

dc5_yt....What machine did you end up getting?
razorsedge, i ended up getting the thinkpad r51.
Which r51 Model #?
Did you buy direct from Ibm? If not who?
Was wondering if it has a wifi switch to turn it on and off?
Also if it has a light on the notebook showing if its on or off?

Thanks...

Hey Dc5 is this it.....

http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=34-146-056&depa=3

if so looks like a great machine, Ive been looking at this one too and a 2883ARU model but newegg doesnt offer the ARU.

Think this model (new egg link) was on sale last weekend as it appears it has gone up in price a bit.

Some questions if you dont mind answering....(or anyone else)
1. What have you been getting for battery life?
2. Does the palm rest or bottom get hot?
3. Some have said that the fan runs all the time and is noisey?
4. How do the 3 Nav buttons work above the touchpad?
5. Do you know what neweggs policy is for dead pixels?
6. What do you dislike about it now that youve had it for a little bit

Thanks, hope your enjoying it..

dc5_yt, glad to hear that you are enjoying your notebook. I have a T42 2379DXU and love it also. Regarding the RAM question, if you stick with Word Processing then 256 mb is fine. For more intensive work or play, I would upgrade to at least 512 mb. You can do so for about $50 at crucial.com. That website makes it easy to find the right module as long as you know your model number. It is only a matter of unscrewing a panel at the bottom and then snapping the module in (always refer to the manual). It ought to take about 3 minutes to do.
