    Hi, i just bought a used R40 (6 months, but doesnt even look like it was taken out of box more than a few times..)
    This is my first laptop, so there are a few things i noticed and im wondering if it's normal.

    1) i was fooling around with it and pushing the fcn and f9, f10, f11, etc buttons a few times... one of them made it go into hibernation. However when i restarted it by pushing the power button, it would load.. then immediately go back to hibration again. I tried starting 4, 5 times. the same thing happened. Finally i held the power button for longer and forced it to do a proper start (?) then it restarted properly this time. I went to the start menu, and choose hibernation from the list and then tried again pushing the power button to resume it. This time it worked fine. So im curious.. was that a glitch, or was it because i pushed the fcn and f9/f10/or whatever button that forced it to hibernate a few times..?

    2) battery life. ive read that it has a high battery life, but how much can i expect? it seems to decrease a percent per every 4 minutes doing nothing (expect moving mouse around), with the power setting as "super power saver" and at the highest brightness. Is that normal?

    3) is the warranty still valid (it still has 6 months left)? i heard that ibm uses serial numbers to check the warranty so it doesnt matter if you are the original owner as long as the warranty period is still not over.

    and 4) how do i turn off that annoying beep that occurs (or atleast decrease the volume) when it starts up or sleeps?

    Thanks for any help/advice given :) sorry for being such a newbie with laptops ^^;;

    1) Hibernation is initiated by pressing Fn and F12. I've found with the R40 I'm using now, that occassionally, after I've hibernated the computer, it will not resume back into Windows. The hibernation progress bar reaches the full mark, then the screen turns off. I'd assume it's a bug/incompatibility between the laptop and Windows.
    4) The volume of the sounds is controlled by the buttons to the right of the "Access IBM" button.

    Hi bluegirlx,
    I've got an R40 as well.
    It was probably a glitch with the hiberbation. I would disable hibernation all together, if you want to boot quick just use standby mode as it is safer. I've had many wierd problems with hibernation and it also uses harddrive space equal to the amount of ram you have. Standy will use 1% power per hour when not in use though. 4%/ minute is normal with the brightness at full power, afterall that equals 400 Minutes of use! If it was super power saving mode then the brightness was not at the highest level unless you put it there, if you did then it is not really saving that much power as turning down brightnees is the biggest power saver.
    For the warranty you need to make sure the previous owner contacted IBM support and transferred ownership. If the notebook came from Ebay or someone you don't know it could have been stolen at some point and if IBM was contacted that it was stolen, sneding it in for repair or service will get it returned to it's original owner.

    You can turn off the beep by going into the control panel power settings and setting it in the "beeps/sounds" menu.

    Good luck and enjoy your R40, they are really nice systems, and disable hibernation cause it can for some reason cause real problems, at least for me it has.
