It is a pretty nice laptop, but there are a couple of things that I did not like when I got it.

First, the HDD makes this continuous grinding sound when the laptop is turned on, even when I am not doing anything on it. It is 160GBs and 7200rpms.

Second, the right side palm rest's color came faded. It it what it looks like when it has been used for a while.

Should I try to return it and get a new one, and will they allow me to return it under these conditions? I just received this laptop last night. I don't know what happened while Lenovo was building it and UPS was delivering it, but I have not dropped it or anything. I just received it and placed it on my bedroom desk. The color fading isn't all that bad really, could have been just a mediocre paint job. The whining sound of the HDD isn't that loud but its there.

Any input would be great. Thanks!

Mine is "Out for Delivery" so I hope it doesn't haven't have the same problems. My opinion is if you spent over $1,000 it should be pretty darn perfect and if it isn't you should call up to see what they can do for you

i would call asap and get yourself a new one.. i wouldnt stand for anything faded and if your hard drive is making noise.. its not a good thing.. really you shouldnt even hear a hard drive... even 7200rpm.. let us know what they tell you

Grinding noises and harddrives don't mix. It doesn't matter if it is a 7200rpm, grinding sounds are usually not a good thing. The faded part is also not something I would expect on a brand new laptop.

    I would return it

Thanks for the input guys. I was going to do a clean install later tonight to see if that does anything to the HDD sound, but I will definitely give them a call. I don't get off work until later in the evening, so I will probably call them first thing on my day off tomorrow. I will keep you guys posted.

Quick question: If I do end up having to return my T61, will I have to send it back to HK, and then they will restart the whole process over again? how does this work?

    Thanks :)

No, you'll probably send it to a receiving center in the US.

I received my new t61 yesterday and it is perfect. Same hd as yours, only quiet. I would get another one. You have 10 days to send it back on a ra #, and a new one is currently only taking about a week, so you could plan it and not really even miss it. Just would need the credit line available to float both until the return gets credited.

1 week is nice, but the problem is that I paid through my debit card and I would definitely not have the funds available for another charge. I don't mind waiting longer, I just want a new laptop without issues.
