This is a pretty good guide to new laptop inspection. I wouldn't go that far, but do give it a good look-over. Also, make sure you burn your recovery DVDs in Vista.

I highly recommend taking a few minutes to inspect the hardware and admire its sheer beauty ;) .

I also got my T400 the other day, and setup some security (eg. fingerprint reader) did a Java update and some Windows updates before trying to make the Recovery DVDs.
Does it matter that I did these updates first ?

Also, I read that I should only be able to make these DVDs once, and that it would take about 3 DVDs
Well, it just took 1 DVD (named Rescue & Recovery Startup Disk), and I can still go in and repeat the process.
Does this mean it didn't work properly ?

Should I wipe the laptop back to factory settings and start again, or am I OK to start installing more things.

    Thanks

Ha you fell in the same trick as me. The recovery disc you made is just to get to the "recovery" start up screen if for whatever reason you're laptop is not booting right. The discs you want to create are located in a similar area but are called "Create product recovery media" (I think... well it's the other option to what you chose).

You can make several of the same discs as you have just created, whereas the product recovery discs you will only be able to create once. It will take 1cd and 2dvds or 3 dvds.

    Thanks Xenon!
I see where you mean, and will try again.

Another question in the meantime please - how long does it normally take for your parts to show up in the parts lookup ?
I've had mine for 4 days now, and registered the warranty 3 days ago, and still it says 'No parts to list' (I want to check the keyboard and the screen in particular, as well as for general interest in other bits).

So far, everything seems great apart from a springy keyboard, which I just reported to the keyboard replacement scheme in time. Only problem apart from the keyboard is it has dropped its internet connection several times and had to have the wireless radio turned on again.

    Thanks

get rid of Vista and replace with Windows 7.
